Life after creosote: why you can’t buy it anymore (and why you don’t need to)

Spend any time on gardening forums and you’ll inevitably hear the same refrain: "They don’t make it like they used to". Often they’re talking about Creosote. And let’s be honest, when you see how some off-the-shelf DIY store paints perform, it’s easy to see why people miss the old-school chemicals.

For many that pungent, heavy scent sparks memories of hot summers and freshly treated fences baking in the sun. Creosote was the gold standard; cheap, killed off every bug that looked at it, and seemed to last forever.

Then the regulations changed. Old-school Creosote was restricted to professional agricultural and industrial use. To many, it felt like another case of "the world gone mad". But here’s the truth: you are better off without it.

The problem with the "good old days"

While that nostalgic summer smell was iconic, it came at a price. Creosote was a heavy coal-tar derivative. Toxic, a known carcinogen, and a nightmare for the environment. If you leaned against a treated fence on a warm day, your clothes were ruined. If it rained too soon after application, the runoff ended up in your soil and flowerbeds. It was effective, but it was "dirty".

The modern alternative: science vs. solvents

We’ve spent more than 40 years formulating finishes that outperform old-school chemicals. Our Fence, Shed & Barn Paint, for example, is a modern, technically advanced, high-build acrylic polymer resin. Unlike Creosote, which relies on coal-tar to preserve wood, our formulation uses a microporous, breathable "skin" to protect timber.

100% VOC & odour-free: While the "smell of summer" was nostalgic, it was also toxic. Our coating releases zero solvents or spirits into the atmosphere, making it safe for your garden, pets, and even internal use.

Microporous technology: This is the secret to longevity. The coating is "breathable," meaning it allows moisture to escape from the wood while remaining completely waterproof. This is what prevents the cracking and flaking seen in off-the-shelf DIY-store paints.

Impact & alkali resistant: Engineered for more than just colour; it provides a hard-wearing barrier, flexible enough to move with the wood as the seasons change.

All-in-one productivity: Because it acts as its own primer, undercoat, and topcoat, you get trade-level protection in a fraction of the time.

The verdict: superior performance vs. nostalgia

The "good old days" had a scent that defined a generation, but coatings science has simply outgrown coal-tar. Creosote was restricted for good reason. It wasn’t a case of "health and safety gone mad", far from it. It was necessary to remove a known carcinogen and environmental toxin from gardens and workspaces. Protecting your fence shouldn't mean poisoning soil or risking health.

Today’s trade-strength polymers are more than a "safer alternative", they are superior. It’s time to stop dwelling on the past and start using coatings that are engineered for the modern world. It’s time to embrace the new professional standard.
